Furanova’s FDCA is cost-competitive with fossil products. In addition, green hydrogen is produced as a co-product, with no extra power or cost.

Plastic has a fossil problem

Around 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from plastic production. PET alone accounts for roughly 1%. Until now, there's been no alternative at scale, limiting the growth of the bio-based plastic market.
          

Solution

We found a sustainable route that pays

Furanova converts sugar and green electricity into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the building block for PEF and many recyclable polymers. The same reaction produces green hydrogen: One process delivers two of the products the energy transition needs most.
          

Our mission is to develop and license an economic process for the production of different plastics like PEF, nylon, polyurethane etc. They all can be produced from FDCA.

Sugar to HMF
Sugar from various sources is converted to the intermediate HMF in a continuous process.

HMF purification
The crude HMF is purified to remove any unwanted side-products such as humins before being fed continuously to the electrolyzer.

Electrolysis to FDCA
Using electric power from renewable sources HMF is oxidized completely to FDCA in a unique electrolyzer setup. The FDCA is isolated continuously while at the same time green hydrogen is collected [patent pending].

FDCA purification
The FDCA is purified to high-quality polymer grade FDCA. The final product is now ready to be converted into sustainable, bio-based plastics like PEF.

01Green Hydrogen

Our process produces green hydrogen from the same green electricity. No extra energy, no extra cost. That hydrogen can be sold in synthesis of ammonia or methanol, hydrogenation, Fischer Tropsch, refining metals, desulfurization, etc., or converted back to electricity in a fuel cell to power production through periods of low sun or wind.
